That quirky thing called innovation.

Innovation is a buzz word that is thrown around  far too much.  Companies use it to elicit “oohs and aahs” for their businesses and products each and every day. The funny thing is that innovation is around all of us.  You have seen it before.  You have held it and carried it as your own.  You have been graced by it and may not have even known it.  Innovation is in all of us.  There is not a single human being on earth who does not possess the power to innovate.  You don’t need to be wearing an Armani suit to be innovative.  Every person is innovative, but only a select few act on this god-given ability.  Innovation, to me, can arise through two distinct realms:

  1. Acting on an idea : Have you ever read about an invention and said, “How on earth did I not think about that?”  We all have.  Innovation in its purest form stems from an individual.  Sometimes these individuals act upon the ideas that pop into their head and it becomes something more.  Everyone around them praises them as innovative, but really they were willing to take a chance on something they believed in.
  2. Joining an innovative project : Innovation can be fostered on top on innovation.  When the ball gets rolling on a solid idea or proposal, it oftentimes sparks several spawn ideas.  When people begin believing in something and understand the concept and background of an idea set, further innovation often results.

The moral of the story is not to wager it all on the next idea you have; rather, it is to simply believe in yourself and be confident in your abilities.  You are innovative and cutting edge.  Don’t believe it?  You will at one point - trust me :)

    Hi Corey,

While many companies do more of the “innovation talk” looking for the oohs and ahhs as you describe, there are planty of companies that understand the importance of innovation as a driver of growth and value for the organization.

I do really like your theme of innovation everywhere. You know, innovative practice is a skill that can be developed. Integrating innovation in to your everyday activities can help in this regard. I wrote a short piece on that topic recently. You can read it here : http://www.innovatingtowin.com/innovating_to_win/2008/01/everyday-innova.html.

Take a look and let me know what you think.

    Cheers,

    Jim
