Randy Moss: the man, the myth, the hypocrite.
Randy Moss frustrates me. He is a dynamic player on the football field, possessing the rare combination of size and speed. He came into the league with the Minnesota Vikings and, because of the draft, had a chip on his shoulder. He ultimately put up what is arguably one of the best offensive rookie performances the NFL has ever seen with 17 TD catches and 1300+ yards. His superb play continued with the Vikings for the next few seasons , putting up 10+ touchdowns and 1200+ receiving yards with ease. However, Randy soon became unhappy with the situation in Minnesota. His effort made him borderline non-existent on the field and his perennial pro bowl numbers culminated in Minny with a 49 catch season in 2004. Minnesota grew tired of Randy Moss’ apparent lack of effort and dealt him to Oakland for pennies on the dollar. Oakland, ecstatic that is had acquired one of the most prolific offensive forces in the league, readied for a big season in 2005. However, Randy Moss didn’t show up in Oakland. A lazy incarnation of a 6′4″, 210 LB superstar arrived in the bay area. Randy Moss’s two seasons in Oakland amounted to nothing more than cry-baby antics. He rarely showed any emotion on the field and looked lackadaisical and bored. He collected his multi-million dollar salary with no shame. So in the 2007 offseason, Oakland wanted to rid itself of their “superstar” wide receiver. The NE Patriots, who needed a top flight WR (who doesn’t) traded a 4th round (yes, 4th round) draft pick to acquire Moss. Now that Randy Moss got paired with Tom Brady, he all of a sudden acted like he gave a damn all season once again. He taunted opponents and caught an NFL record 23 TD receptions. How is this situation fair? Granted, other teams could have dealt for Moss, but who wants to deal with his antics? The Patriots got him and he decided he wanted to try once again? If I got a bad grade on an exam, could I begin doing no assignments and get switched to a new class and still get an A? I don’t think so. Randy Moss has recently been charged with assaulting a woman in Florida and has caught 2 passes for 28 yards in the playoffs so far. Is he a ticking time bomb? Will Randy Moss’ sketchy past come back to haunt the unblemished team destined for perfection? I can only hope so. It would only be fair that a team aiming for 19-0 becomes derailed by a “me-first” athlete. Unfortunately, the Patriots are just too focused to let Randy Moss affect them. I can’t wait until he gets a HUGE contract in the offseason and goes and mopes around the field for the rest of his career. He doesn’t care, just ask him.
