Mass shootings a fad that we need to end NOW!
In the wake of another extremely disturbing mass shooting at a U.S. school, I wanted to write a piece on how mass shootings are quickly becoming a fad around the world. As a current senior in college, I am very relieved to be graduating and moving out of the American social experiment that is college. In the past year, we have had numerous mass shootings and attempted shootings in colleges, malls, middle schools and high schools. Each time one of these events occurs, it is blasted on news channels around the world. It is headline news for sure - which is the exact way the people committing these crimes want to exit this world. They oftentimes leave a message and that message is repeated over and over on CNN, ABC, BBC, you name it. Its a free ticket to the television set and newspaper of every person around the world. I am struggling to figure out a way to remedy this because it is a catch-22. There is no way that the news could let these horrific events pass by with no coverage, but if they cover it, the killer’s become infamous - something many depressed and discontent people around the world feel is the perfect way to end their miserable lives. My suggestion would be to cover the stories and touch on the tragic events, but to focus on the individuals who have their lives cut short because of another’s greed. The VT shooting was so sad because we found out about the wonderful lives the victims led before they were ruthlessly murdered. These were great people that could and did accomplish great things. They should still be doing so today. I think if the media stopped giving so much press to the demonic individuals who commit these crimes, it would tempt less people to pull such a cowardly act. I am interested in opinions on this matter so please leave comments - I will respond to them
