Disturbing ads aim to trick parents into lie!
As I was perusing Star Magazine (classy, I know) , I came across an ad that deeply disturbed me. It was a simple photo: a child choosing between a plate of four bagel bites and a plate with a whole wheat PB&J sandwich. The caption underneath the image states the bagel bites are a better food choice because it has less fat and calories. I have more than one issue with this well-crafted lie.
The picture is set-up to make it look like the sandwich and bagel bites are equivalent in size. However, have you ever seen a bagel bite? They can be eaten in one bite. They are the size of a U.S. half-dollar. If you eat bagel bites, you must eat at least 10-15 to feel full. However, the ad suggests that four (yes four) bagel bites will fill up a child as much as a PB&J. But this isn’t the most disturbing part - the disturbing part is the claim that bagel bites have less fat and less calories. Peanut butter is a proven healthy fat that is a needed part of any person’s diet. The bread is whole wheat and provides much of the needed daily amount of 16 grams of wheat. The bagel bites are made with processed white bread, processed american cheese and frozen marinara sauce. It is very confusing and in poor taste to suggest such a processed product is better for your child than a traditional PB&J. I hope parents aren’t tricked by this tasteless marketing. If I were deciding between the two for my child, I would much rather feed them a homemade sandwich than processed frozen food. Shame on you bagel bites!

I’d rather have a homemade sandwich as well. I’ve cut my gums and burned the roof of my mouth for the last time on darned bagel bites!
